- Optics over magnification. A clean, bright stereo image matters more than the highest number on the spec sheet.
- Illumination quality. Most new units use LED now, which runs cooler and lasts longer. Make sure the color rendering feels accurate, not washed out.
- Filters. A cobalt blue filter is needed for fluorescein exams. In an ED setting, that's not a luxury feature.

- Service response time. A down slit lamp halts clinic volume. Ask how quickly the supplier can respond before you ask about the discount.
In 2022, one of our affiliated clinics chose a slit lamp based on printed specs and later found the tonometer mount didn't fit its existing prism. The adapter cost more than the discount they got on the unit. Demo the actual configuration before you buy.
What is dental CAD/CAM?
CAD/CAM stands for computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing. In dentistry, it's the digital workflow used to create ceramic restorations: the dentist scans the prepared tooth with an intraoral scanner, designs the crown or inlay on screen, and mills it from a ceramic block while the patient waits. The restoration is then finished and seated—often in a single appointment.
The traditional route—impression, temporary crown, lab fabrication, second visit—still works and still has a place. Complex, highly aesthetic cases often deserve a skilled lab technician's judgment. But for a routine single crown, the chairside CAD/CAM route turns a two-week process into a same-day one.
There's something satisfying about watching a patient walk out with a permanent restoration they didn't have to wait two weeks to receive. That's efficiency you can see.
